Welcome to Scrabble Section of the Lagos Country Club Ikeja.
After the Hullabaloo in the Club occasioned by the proposed merger of the section with the Other Games sections, the Scrabble section has since settled down to work with the new Excos headed by Mr. Giwa Hakeem. As part of the promises made by this chairman to re enliven the Scrabble section, a tournament was sponsored by Mr. Emmanuel Mogbolu to commemorate the 14th day in office of the new Excos. This is unprecedented in the history of Lagos Country Club.
The Scrabble section is strategically located at the upper building in the Club, sharing floor with the library for members who want to busy themselves with some academic work. It is a Section most members dread to frequent, simply because it is believed the game is too brain-tasking.
To some members, it is the Section for the book-worms while some prefer to call it OLD PEOPLES HOME because of the preponderant number of life members of the Club that always come around to play the game. Yet, these are men you would not regret sharing your time with.
To us at the Scrabble Section, we see this as one of the liveliest Sections you can have around. It is a serene but intellectually vibrating environment where you get to learn and appreciate the etymologies (origins) of so many different languages and, by so doing, improve your level of vocabulary while it keeps you mentally alert at all times.
To make the Section more attractive to members, we have introduced an equally brain-tasking but grammar-free fun-game of Chess. This we hope will make the Section livelier and increase the number of participating members. Smile
Part of the efforts to popularise the game, and hence the Section, is the introduction of Coaching Clinics/Competition particularly targeted at the younger members of the Club. We hope that these young players will be the future pillars of the Section.
Finally, we wish to pay tribute to those founding fathers, like Chief Femi Gbadebo, Chief Femi Oluwole, Otunba Dele Opanuga,Mr Wale Dada-Bello, Air Cdre Bolaji David (rtd) and a host of others who saw to the emergence of Scrabble Section and who have seen to its continued existence among the committee of Sections in the Club.
ACTIVITES IN THE SECTION -
It is noteworthy to say that as part of efforts to improve on the hospitality of the Scrabble section a TEA/COFFEE Corner has been created in the section for any member/guest to come and have free hot tea/coffee, sponsored for a period of one year by Barrister Mrs. Yejide Osunkeye.
Furthermore, the section has rejuvenated and rebranded the TGIF to JIMO OLOYIN which will be held every last Friday of the month, starting from Friday 31st May, 2031. This is novelle. You cant get it anywhere else!
Members should expect a fun-filled summer holidays for their children as the Scrabble section will hold a one-week Scrabble Clinic/Training, which will be preceded by a tournament for children aged 8-18. This is a great opportunity for our children to display the intellectual repository they are imbued with.
Dont miss this!
